Thumbnail Sheet for Paracostus

Paracostus is a newly described genus split out from Costus, the former subgenus Paracostus. They are entirely different looking from other Costaceae with cute little flowers that pop out of the ground or the leaf nodes of the plants. There are two basic types represented by the African P. englerianus and the Borneo plant P. paradoxus, but some Malaysian botanists have recently further divided the Borneo plants by adding 3 new species. I only have a few photos of these plants, mostly thanks to my friend John Mood who has spent much more time than I have in the jungles of Sarawak.
