Costus lacerus flowers This is a plant that is similar to and often confused with Cheilocostus speciosus. The distinguishing characteristic is the lacerated edges of the dark red bracts and calyx. Cheilocostus speciosus has sharply pointed bracts with solid edges. Cheilocostus lacerus is also a somewhat showier (IMO) plant that Cheilocostus speciosus, ofter producing 4 to 5 large flowers at the same time as in the picture below.

This plant has been well tested for hardiness, both here and in Baton Rouge where I got my original, so I know it is hardy at least to zone 8B. It may well be hardy in even colder areas, as it has thrived quite well here for many years even in our coldest winters, always coming back up and flowering well by mid summer.

Cheilocostus lacerus gets quite tall, as much as 8 feet in my garden, in about 4-5 hours of direct sun. The stems are very thick and strong allowing the huge flower head to be well supported. Cheilocostus lacerus will produce lots of seeds and a few of them are likely to self seed in your garden. Costus lacerus should be given very rich, moist organic soil with plenty of water during its active growth.
