terminal inflorescence NOTE: This was formerly listed simply as C. guanaiensis Compact Form but now has been given the cultivar name 'Sweet Charlotte'.

Costus guanaiensis is usually found in a form that grows to well over 8 feet tall, and only produces terminal flowers (at the top of the plant). They are beautiful flowers, but hard to see at that height and hard to grow in the average greenhouse. Offered here is a very compact form of Costus guanaiensis that not only produces terminal flowers, but also basal flowers on the same plant! It grows to about 3 feet tall and is well suited for growing in pots. In frost free areas it makes a good garden plant, easy to place in the landscape and relatively showy due to the dual-blooming nature. I found this plant growing in the greenhouse at the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus. They told me it was acquired many years ago from an orchid grower in Central Florida, but the precise origins of this plant are unknown. I have seen plenty of the taller forms of Costus guanaiensis in the rainforests of Central and South America, but never a form like this.

This Costus has not been tested for hardiness, but I doubt it will survive outdoors in zones north of zone 10. In a pot in the greenhouse, it is very easy to grow, vigorous and free flowering.
