Costus 'Tropicais' I received this plant as an unidentified Costus from Jackie Petrov in Houston who received it from her aunt in Brazil. After growing it out myself and examining the flower parts, I sent photos to Dr. Paul Maas who believes it is a hybrid of Costus spiralis and Costus arabicus. It has the inflorescence and upright flowers of C. spiralis and the cordate leaf base of C. arabicus. Whatever the identity, it is indeed a unique and a beautiful plant. I decided to name it 'Tropicais' after Jackie's GardenWeb user name, and I think the name fits very nicely.

Hardiness is at least zone 9 (and possibly zone 8B) as it has been grown in south Houston for several years. It has proven hardy here in Tallahassee (officially zone 8B) for several years. I grow it in fairly sunny conditions, 5+ hours of direct sun. It showed no signs of problems under those conditions. I am growing in the usual moist, rich, organic soil that so many gingers like.
