Costus erythrothyrsus -flower Costus erythrothyrsus is a small Costus growing to a height of no more than 2 1/2 feet, not often found in plant catalogs. It has very nice red inflorescence with red and pink flowers. In his 1972 monograph, Dr. Paul Maas placed this species in synometry with Costus spiralis var. spiralis, but it is currently recognized as a valid species name.

It produces mostly basal blooms but in 2004 my plant also produced blooms terminal on a leafy stem. I tested a good sized clump outdoors in the mild winter of 2005 here in zone 8B Tallahassee and it did not return at all, so I would say it is not hardy north of zone 10. It is small enought to be grown in a pot and brought indoors in winter. It should be grown in rich, moist organic soil in part sun to very light or filtered shade.
