Costus claviger flower According to Dr. PJM Maas, the Costus expert from the University of Utrecht, Costus claviger is a medium sized Costus from northern parts of South America, quite variable in form and rarely found in cultivation. The flowers are similar to C. erythrophyllus and C. varzearum, but distinguished by narrower leaves and longer ligules. This is a very different-looking Costus, with thin spiraling stems, distinctive dark purple ligules, and wavy foliage.

It grows to about 6 feet tall in a large pot in the greenhouse, and has bloomed for me as a potted plant. The inflorescences are basal and rather boring (IMHO), but what the heck, not every Costus can be awesome - not even for a Costus lover like me.

There are other, completely different looking plants that have been identified as forms of Costus claviger and are actually more commonly found in cultivation, but they deviate from Dr. Maas' description, so I really do not know for certain which ones are correctly identified.

I have not tested this for hardiness, but would not expect it to be winter hardy outdoors any colder than zone 10.
