TWO FLOWERS PER BRACT
Certain African species of Costus are known to produce two flowers in each bract. This is used to distinguish some of the African species from other similar ones. It may be difficult to tell how many flowers are in each bract unless you dissect the inflorescence, carefully removing a bract along with its bracteole(s) and calyx. Costus with two flowers per bract are marked "Y". Costus one flower per bract are marked "N". If this characteristic is unknown or variable, it is entered in the GingersRus Plant Database as "U".
