Cheilocostus mulus

Costus mulus (Meekiong, Ipor et Tawan)

BOTANICAL NAME: Cheilocostus mulus
SUBGENUS:
GROUP:
SECTION:
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Rheedea, Vol. 18 (2) - 2008
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Species published in 2008 in Rheedea, Vol. 18 (2) - 2008. It is similar to Cheilocostus speciosus but differs by having a basal inflorescence and reddish band on the stamen. If was found in a limited area of Borneo, at Tutoh in Miri Division of Sarawak, in a small area at altitudes between 500 and 800 meters.

Note that this was published under the genus Costus instead of Cheilocostus as I have it listed here. The official name at this time is Costus mulus (Meekiong, Ipor et Tawan). Several new species of Cheilocostus and Paracostus were described in recent years by members of the University of Malaysia at Sarawak. In 2010, I was in Singapore and discussed this with Datuk Lim Chong Keat and he told me they had not accepted the generic reclassification of Costus in 2006 and therefore had described this new species under the genus Costus.

A copy of the article from Rheedea, Vol. 18 (2) - 2008 can be viewed at http://www.gingersrus.com/COSTACEAE/Cheilocostus/mulus/Meekiong_Costus_mulus_R.pdf. The illustration here shows it with axilary branching and the description has it semi-woody, branched and bushy with stiff, spiny bracts so it is presumed to be a different species from Cheilocostus borneensis. It is not specifically distinguished from C. globosus but it appears to be part of that complex.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Borneo, at Tutoh in Miri Division of Sarawak, in a small area at altitudes between 500 and 800 meters
HEIGHT:0 to 0 meters
