NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas described and named this species in 1990. Species characterized by a basal red-bracteate infl. and yellow flowers. The labellum of the flower is tubular, and the corolla lobes are definitely patent creating a star-lke appearance: the new species is name after this feature which is unique in Costus. In the event of there being no flowers, the almost glabrous plant can be recognized by its extremely short ligule (1-2 mm) and its long calyx (17-22 mm).

This species is not in cultivation and only known from one collection in Peru about 50 km southwest of the town of Quince Mil. I have never seen any photos of it.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Peru, Dept. Puno, Prov. Carabaya, vic. Of San Gaban, on steep forested hills at 600-800 m.
HEIGHT:0 to 2 meters
