NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas described and named this species in 1997. Characterized by infl. with red appendaged bracts with reflexed concave appendages and rather long ligule. Bracteole distinctive, bicarinate by longitudinal ridges at the adaxial side, often one of the ridges provided with a subapical callus. Resembles C. montanus and C. barbatus but distinguished by the form of the appendages.

Based on collection data, it blooms in late winter or early spring (dry season) unlike most Costus spp. In Costa Rica which bloom in early to mid summer.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Costa Rica, San JosT at elevations 900-1100 m & Puntarenas sea level to 1400m, along roadsides
HEIGHT:1 to 2 meters
