NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Described and named by Maas in 1976. Costus nitidus is closely related to C. plicatus, without the plicate leaves.

Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica says it can be recognized by its large size, shiny leaves and stems, and red bracts. There have been very few collections of this plant in Costa Rica. It is found at 500-900 meters on the Carribean slope in the mountain ranges Tilarán, Central, and Talamanca, flowering in Feb., May, and August.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Panama and Costa Rica, in forests from 50-900 m.
