Costus zamoranus

Costus zamoranus Steyerm.

BOTANICAL NAME: Costus zamoranus
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:I-Costus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 18, 1977
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:In Flora Neotropica No. 8, Maas evidently had little information about the floral structure of this species, indicated it is close to C. amazonicus, distinguishable by the calyx. In Flora Neotropica No. 18 he amended the description, excluding the Colombian specimens and indicates it is very closely related to Costus laevis.

The photos are from a plant identified by Tom Wood as Costus zamoranus. I have not verified that it matches this description. Note that this species is described with basal inflo. and no appendages to the bracts.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:along streams, 1000-2000 meters, Ecuador and Colombia, prov. of Santiago-Zamora & Morona-Santiago, between 1300 and 2000 m.
HEIGHT:1 to 2 meters
