NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Closely related to C. sprucei, both with chartaceous bracts, but C. chartaceus has strongly prominent veins on both surfaces of the leaves, a longer bracteole and larger calyx. Comparable also to C. lasius and to C. scaber. SEE TABLE COMPARING THESE 4 SPECIES.

There are a few differences with the plant common in horticulture as the "Christmas Costus", but this plant does key out to Costus chartaeceus. Note prominent veins in photo #8287.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Southwestern Columbia in forests from sea level to 300 m.
