BOTANICAL NAME: Costus wilsonii
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:II-Ornithophilus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 18, 1977
SECONDARY SOURCES:Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica Vol II, 2003, Missouri Botanical Garden
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Described and named by Maas in 1976, named after Robert Wilson, dir. Of Las Cruces Botanical Garden, Costa Rica. It was previously thought to be a hybrid of C. scaber and C. lasius. It is distinguished by the very characteristic, long, involute (rolled up) acumen and the labellum has well developed, often reddish-veined lateral lobes. Bract color is variable, generally yellow, but sometimes orange, reddish or green.

Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica - Described the labellum as tubular, but somewhat inflated, yellow with reddish lines at the apex. Then goes on to say that although they are described as tubular, they have lobes very much or somewhat extended.

As noted under the description of Costus scaber, I found at the higher altitudes on the Osa Peninsula, some rather diminuative plants with thin spiralling stems, long involute acumens, red bracts, and flowers only in bud, but red - not yellow, tentatively identified as Costus scaber that might actually be Costus wilsonii. See PID#3607. They do not match well to either C. scaber or to C. wilsonii.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Cloud forests of Panama and Costa Rica, 1250-1850 meters.
HEIGHT:0 to 4 meters
