Costus acreanus

Costus acreanus (Loes.) Maas

BOTANICAL NAME: Costus acreanus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 8, 1972
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This species is closest to C. laevis, but has velutinous bracts, bracteoles, calyx and corolla, and the calyx is longer than that of C. laevis. Evidently Maas did not see the inflorescence in living material, but described colors based on report by Ule. In Monograph No. 18, he modified the description. These changes are included on the chart below. He also reported a probable natural hybrid with C. guanaiensis var. guanaiensis found in Brazil, with hirsute stems and bracts, some of them appendaged. Inflo. photographed in No. 18, page 182.

More on this species on the datasheet and more photographs to be loaded soon.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:marshes, varzea forests and on low hills to 700m, sw Brazil and adjacent Peru - also in Columbia.
HEIGHT:1 to 2 meters
