BOTANICAL NAME: Costus longebracteolatus
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:I-Costus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 8, 1972
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas says this is well characterized by strigose to hirsute stems, very long bractiole and calyx. Note: description in monograph #8 is in Latin, possible errors in my interpretation. Primary discrepancy is that the key indicates it is in Group 2 = NOT appendaged, but the description includes appendaged bracts. Related to C. laevis, C. acreanus, and C. amazonicus. (His description has labellum 60 cm long by 50 cm wide - assume this is error, and should be mm) - Supplemental description in monograph #18.

These photos not verified as Costus longebracteolatus.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Amazonian parts of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, in forests from sea level to 900 m.
HEIGHT:2 to 6 meters
