BOTANICAL NAME: Costus vinosus
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:I-Costus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 18, 1977
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This species was named and described by Maas in 1976. The species is rare in nature, found only in the locality listed below. Maas characterized it by the cup shaped basal sheaths and the extremely long ligules.

The photos to the left were taken at Selby Botanical Gardens. The flower colors in the specimen at Selby are quite different from the description in Maas, but there is no doubt about the identification. Maas says this species flowers in June, which is about the same time I found it in flower at Selby.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Very localized, in Colon Province, Panama, in rocky vegetation in forest shade, near river.
HEIGHT:1 to 2 meters
