SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:1-bracts with appendage
SECTION:II-Ornithophilus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 18, 1977
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:29 August, 2003
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas says C. productus is characterized by its red bract-appendages, a very long fragile ligule, and a relatively long callus of the bracts. Maas describes two varieties of C. productus. Variety productus has glabrous to sparsely puberulous leaves. Variety strigosus has densely strigose leaves. Illustration in Flora Neotropica No. 18 is of var. strigosus.

This plant is apparently incorrectly identified in the horticultural trade as Costus curvibracteatus. I have included here photos of the plant in the trade as C. curvibracteatus, now believed to be C. productus var. productus.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Colombia and Peru in forests from sea level to 700 m.
HEIGHT:0 to 1 meters
