NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This species is recognized by its usually small, obovate to elliptic, glabrous leaves with a cordate base.

The photos to the left are from a plant in US horticulture. It generally matches the description by Maas. Note that collection information from the Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad were all along the Carribean coast of Costa Rica, at elevations mostly only a couple of meters above sea level.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:lowland thickets in Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, and along Pacific coast of Columbia, even growing on sandy beaches.
