BOTANICAL NAME: Costus arabicus
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:I-Costus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 8, 1972
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:It is the most common Costus in tropical South America, easily identified by its green infl and snowy white flowers, often tinged with purple. A peculiar feature is its often branched habit; the branches usually arise from the axils of the lowest bracts, but they also spring from the leaf axils.

NOTE: The photos to the left have been verified as Costus arabicus, including the variegated plant that is found in horticulture as Costus amazonicus 'Variegatus'. Since this was first written in 2003, I have "discovered" many more examples of this species including one aberrant one in Guyana with bicarinate bracteoles. Photos to be loaded soon.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Moist forests, river banks in Antilles and tropical South America, esp the Guianas, Amazon River Basin and south Brazil.
HEIGHT:1 to 3 meters
