BOTANICAL NAME: Costus osae
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:1-bracts with appendage
SECTION:II-Ornithophilus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Brittonia 49(2), pg 274-279, 1997
SECONDARY SOURCES:Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica Vol II, 2003, Missouri Botanical Garden
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas described and named this species in 1997. Characterized by obovate-elliptic leaves with both sides densely to rather densely villose and infl composed of reddish, more or less patent bracts. Bracteole distinctive, bicarinate by longitudinal ridges on the adaxial side, often one of the ridges provided with a subapical callus. Photos at the left illustrate the bicarinate bracteoles. Vegetatively shows much resemblance to C. malortieanus, but differs by reddish bracts and longer ligule.

Maas mentions that the specimen from Tom Wood produced two flowers per bract in some of the lower bracts. I have a clone of this same specimen, but have not observed this. I asked Tom about it and he said he had not seen that either.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Restricted to Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica
HEIGHT:0 to 1 meters
