NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas describes two varieties of Costus lima. Variety lima has the upper sides of leaves scabrid to the touch, by thickened bases of appressed hairs. Variety scabremarginatus is only somewhat scabrid toward the margins of the leaves. Another unnamed variety from Peru is characterized by having the upper sides of the leaves glabrous.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Central America and Andes, also found in Honduras, in forests, swamps or along rivers, sea level to 1000 m.
HEIGHT:2 to 4 meters
