BOTANICAL NAME: Costus spicatus
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:II-Ornithophilus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 8, 1972
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas says the name C. spicatus is very often misapplied to specimens of C. spiralis and C. scaber and can be distinguished by greenish bracts. Flora Neotropica includes a table that compares the three species (Click Here).

I have accepted that the plant common in horticulture as C. spicatus is really C. scaber. See discussion of this at http://www.gingersrus.com/botanical/description.php?PID=3607.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Hispaniola and the Lesser Antilles in wet forests, swamps or along watercourses from sea level to 500 m.
HEIGHT:1 to 2 meters
