BOTANICAL NAME: Costus malortieanus
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:2-bracts not appendaged
SECTION:I-Costus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 8, 1972
SECONDARY SOURCES:Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica Vol II, 2003, Missouri Botanical Garden
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:Maas says that C. malortieanus is transitional between Section I and Section II, and that it produces abundant nectar, is visited and often pollinated by both Eulaema and hermit hummingbirds.

The photos of the plant parts on this page are from a plant in horticulture. This Costus is very easy to recognize by its broad felty leaves. It is popularly called the "stepladder ginger". The description and illustration in Flora Neotropica matches perfectly with the plant that is found in the trade. I noted in particular the very short calyx in relation to the other flower parts.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Costa Rica and Nicaragua
HEIGHT:1 to 1 meters
