BOTANICAL NAME: Costus varzearum
SUBGENUS:Costus
GROUP:1-bracts with appendage
SECTION:I-Costus
PRIMARY SOURCE USED FOR DESCRIPTION:Maas, Flora Neotropica No. 18, 1977
SECONDARY SOURCES:
LAST UPDATED:
NOTES AND DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:This species was named by Maas from the C. claviger group. He says it is closely related to the Guianan plant, Costus claviger, distinguished by a longer ligule, smaller leaves, smaller flowers, and terminal inflo. instead of basal.

The photos are from a plant in horticulture, and this seems to match perfectly with Maas' description of the species. He has an excellent drawing of this plant in Flora Neotropica No. 18. I have sometimes seen this plant incorrectly named as "Costus sanguineus" in US horticulture.
NATURAL DISTRIBUTION:Inhabits only the varzea forests of Brazil - states of Amazonus and Acre
HEIGHT:0 to 1 meters
