SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

This is a detailed botanical description of plant specimen(s) for this species measured and photographed.

IDENTIFIED AS:
Costus glaucus

LOCATION:
La Gamba Biological Research Station, Costa Rica

SOURCE:
Plant growing at research station, collected locally.

DETERMINATION:
By Dave Skinner. Plant matches perfectly to Maas' description - all glabrous with longer calyx lobes per Maas collection #1462 described in Flora Neotropica #18.

GENERAL:
This particular specimen was extremely tall, well over 20 feet (6 meters), new shoots characteristically glaucus, very large green bracted inflorescence with yellow and red flowers.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Green, glabrous, measured 4.3 cm in diameter above base and was extremely tall as noted above.

LIGULE:
Green, glabrous, deeply 2-lobed, 15 mm long.

PETIOLE:
Green, glabrous, 20 mm long.

LEAVES:
Dark green mature leaves, glabrous, 45-50 cm long by 16 cm wide. Apex acute.

INFLORESCENCE:
To 25 cm long by 5 cm wide, yellow and red flowers at apex of inflo.

BRACTS:
Deep red in the covered part, green on the exposed part, no nectar callus visible, glabrous, 4.5-5 cm long by 4.5 cm wide.

APPENDAGE:
NONE

BRACTEOLE:
Red with white tip at apex,glabrous, boat shaped but one side much narrower than the other side, 3.0 cm long by .8 cm wide.

CALYX:
Red with white tips, glabrous, 3 deep lobes, split on one side, 1.5 cm long by 1.9 cm wide.

COROLLA:
Lobes yellow, glabrous, 5.5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
Red striped, yellow at base and yellow throat, glabrous, 6 cm long by 5 cm wide when spread.

STAMEN:
Yellow, dark red at apex, glabrous, 5.5 cm long by 1.2 cm wide.
