LOCATION:
Le Jardin Ombragé

SOURCE:
Neil Carroll - collected in Panama in the State Forest Guabal, along the trail between Sante Fe and Guabal in Veraguas Province.

DETERMINATION:
By Dave Skinner, based on Maas' description of a form of Costus allenii with plicate leaves, that is found in the Santa Fe region of Panama.

GENERAL:
This is a beautiful foliage plant, with medium green plicate leaves.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Green with some reddish tints, hirsute, 12-14 mm in diameter.

LIGULE:
Green with reddish edge, hairy like sheath, over 16-20 mm long, single lobed

PETIOLE:
Green, puberulous, 12-15 mm long.

LEAVES:
Green, 8 plicate, upper side hirsute, lower side puberulous, brownish colored hairs, obovate, base cordate, apex acuminate, acumen 10-15 mm long, leaves 24-26 cm long by 10-11 cm wide.

INFLORESCENCE:
Terminal on a leafy stem, green bracts and yellow flowers with red markings.

BRACTS:
Covered part red, exposed part green, pubescent, 2.5 cm long by 2.3 cm wide.

APPENDAGE:
NONE

BRACTEOLE:
Pubescent, longer than calyx, 1.3 cm long by .5 cm wide.

CALYX:
Pubescent, very short and wide with shallow lobes, 0.5 cm long by 0.7 cm wide

COROLLA:
Creamy yellow, glabrous, about 4.5 cm long.

LABELLUM:
Red striped with yellow throat, glabrous, about 5 cm long and 3 cm wide when spread.

STAMEN:
Red, glabrous, about 4.5 cm long.
