SOURCE:
Plant in horticulture, origin unknown.

DETERMINATION:
By Dave Skinner, characters match description by Maas.

GENERAL:
Unlike any other Costus, short (to about 25 cm) with felty leaves and bright yellow flowers.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
No visible sheath, leaves appear to extend from below the surface of the ground.

LIGULE:
No visible ligule.

PETIOLE:
No visible petiole, lamina seems to come up from the ground, did not dig up rhizome to examine in detail.

LEAVES:
Medium green, undersides a slightly lighter shade of green, thick pubescense with a soft felty feel, to 30 cm long by 9 cm wide, acuminate apex with a 3 cm acumen.

INFLORESCENCE:


BRACTS:
Light green, pubescent , linear, 4 cm long by 0.8 to 2.0 cm wide.

APPENDAGE:
Dark green, pubescent, foliaceous, acuminate, hard to distinguish from the leaves, 1.7 - 5.0 cm long by 1.2 to 3.0 cm wide.

BRACTEOLE:
Pale green, pubescent, bicarinate with 2 apex points, 3.8 cm long by 1 cm wide.

CALYX:
Pale green, pubescent, lobes acute, 3.5 cm long by 1 cm wide.

COROLLA:
translucent white, pubescent, 5 cm long by 1.5 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
Golden yellow with orange throat, glabrous, round, spreading and open, 7 cm long by 9 cm wide.

STAMEN:
Golden yellow, pubescent, apex broadly dentate, 3.5 cm long by 1.8 cm wide.
