ACCESSION #:
R2827

IDENTIFIED AS:
Costus 'Tico Sunrise'

LOCATION:
Le Jardin Ombragé

SOURCE:
Tom Wood - he said it came from a collection in Hawaii, and had it listed as Costus guanaiensis. Origin unknown.

DETERMINATION:
Species not determined. Possible hybrid with C. guanaiensis. It is impossible to determine this without knowing the origin of the plant or finding the same growing in the wild. I have named this plant 'Tico Sunrise' for identification purposes.

GENERAL:
Tall plant with large fuzzy green leaves, cone resembles Costus scaber (spicatus) but flowers are much broader and bright orange and yellow.

RHIZOME :

SHEATH:
Green with purple bands, sparsely hirsute, thick, stocky, to 3 cm in diameter at base.

LIGULE:
Green, with arachnoid fibers, truncate to 8mm long.

PETIOLE:
Green, to 8 mm long.

LEAVES:
Green, puberulous both sides, to 42 cm long by 14 cm wide, acuminate at apex, acumen to 6 mm long.

INFLORESCENCE:
Terminal on a leafy stem

BRACTS:
Red, apex greenish, glabrous, lt. green callus to 7 mm long, bracts are red with some green tints in exposed part, turning darker purplish and green when mature, apex distinctively incised on each bract, 4.2 cm long by 3.5 cm wide.

APPENDAGE:
NONE, but there is a slight hint of a green apex to the bracts which to me appears to be simply part of the bract, forming a tight cone.

BRACTEOLE:
red, glabrous, boat shaped, 2.8 cm long by .9 cm wide.

CALYX:
Red, glabrous, broad lobes, 1.3 cm long by 1.5 cm wide.

COROLLA:
Orange, yellow at base, very sparsely puberulous, pungent apex , folded sides, to 4.5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
Yellow, red striped lateral lobes, glabrous, slightly spreading but forming a wide tube, to 5 cm long by 2.5 cm wide.

STAMEN:
Yellow, tinged with orange, glabrous, apex truncate but slightly dentate, 4.8 cm long by 1.2 cm wide.

STIGMA:
