LOCATION:
Le Jardin Ombragé

SOURCE:
This specimen was received in the nursery trade and is the type commonly found in the trade, sometimes known as the "Christmas Costus". Origin of this specimen is unknown.

DETERMINATION:
By Dave Skinner, characters match the description by Maas.

GENERAL:
Compact plant with bright red bracts formed in a little ball and pinkish red flowers.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Green, glabrous to sparsely hairy, 8 mm in diameter.

LIGULE:
Green, villose, single lobed, 10 mm long.

PETIOLE:
Green, glabrous to villose like ligule, 5 mm long by 5 mm wide.

LEAVES:
Green both sides, sparsely puberulous on adaxial (upper) side, glabrous on abaxial (under) side, 17-21 cm long by 7-7.5 cm wide. Base is rounded, apex is shortly acuminate with 1 mm acumen.

INFLORESCENCE:
Terminal on a leafy stem, bright red bracts with creamy white to pinkish red flowers. Flower enfolded in corolla lobes giving it a creamy white coloration with pinkish red at base and apex.

BRACTS:
Bracts are bright red with slight light green callus, rounded, 2.5 cm long and wide.

APPENDAGE:
NONE

BRACTEOLE:
Pink, glabrous, extends to same length as calyx, 1.2 cm long by .4 cm wide (folded).

CALYX:
Pink, glabrous, 1 cm long by 1 cm wide.

COROLLA:
Peachy orange toward the base, creamy white at center and pinkish red at apex, color darkening with age, glabrous, 2.8 cm long by 1-1.7 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
Pinkish red, very small and tubular, blood red margin at apex, glabrous, 2.6 cm long by 1.4 cm wide when spread.

STAMEN:
Pinkish red with hot pink margin at apex, protrudes slightly from labellum (looks like a tongue sticking out), 2.8 cm long by .6 cm wide.
