LOCATION:
Le Jardin Ombragé

SOURCE:
Plant acquired from Tom Wood. Origin unknown, but this plant is endemic to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica.

DETERMINATION:
By Dave Skinner, characters match description by Maas.

GENERAL:
Medium sized plant, almost 1 meter tall with fuzzy light green leaves and showy red flowers.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Light green, 12-15 mm in diameter, villose.

LIGULE:
Short, 3-4 mm hairy like sheath.

PETIOLE:
Light green, about 10 mm long, hairy.

LEAVES:
Light green becoming somewhat darker with age, 22-28 cm long by 10-13 cm wide, base cuneate, apex acute to shortly acuminate, acumen 1-2 mm long, densely pubescent both sides.

INFLORESCENCE:
Terminal on a leafy stem. Red patent bracts with red flowers of matching color (makes flowers blend with bracts.) Tendency to grow plantlets at the base of the inflorescence. Did NOT find any with two flowers per bract-bracteole as described.

BRACTS:
Red, pubescent (not measured).

APPENDAGE:
Red, pubescent

BRACTEOLE:
Distinctive bicarinate (two-keeled) as in Maas description, red, pubescent, 2.8 cm long by 1.1 cm wide (not spread)

CALYX:
Deeply split on one side, red, pubescent, 1.5 cm long by .7 in diameter.

COROLLA:
Lobes pinkish red, glabrous to a few minute hairs, dorsal lobe acuminate and hairy at apex, 3.4 cm long by 1 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
Tubular, glabrous, covered by corolla, but white at base with red tip, apex margin turning brown. About 4 cm long.

STAMEN:
About the same color and size as labellum, rather rectangular in shape, white at base with red at apex and brown margin, glabrous, 4 cm long by 0.8 cm wide.
