SOURCE:
Jerry Seymore - origin unknown, this is the common plant that is found in US horticulture, usually under the name Costus amazonicus.

DETERMINATION:
By Dr. Paul Maas, Dr. Chelsea Specht and others. Plant characters match the description of Costus arabicus and DO NOT match with Costus amazonicus.

GENERAL:
Foliage is dark green, variegated with white streaks and succulent feeling. Leaves will sometime have more white than green and plants do not grow very tall in the first year. All plant parts are glabrous.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Green with white markings, glabrous, medium thickness 10-18 mm. Tends to branch extensively along the stem at the leaf nodes.

LIGULE:
Green, glabrous, truncate to slightly lobed, short at 4-7 mm.

PETIOLE:
Green, glabrous, 4-5 mm long and about as wide.

LEAVES:
Variegated green with white markings, glabrous, obovate to ovate, large leaves are 30-32 cm long and 11-12 cm wide. Base is cunate to slightly rounded or cordate, apex is acute or shortly acuminate, acumen is only 1-2 mm long.

INFLORESCENCE:
Terminal on a leafy stem, green with white markings, glabrous, ovoid in shape.

BRACTS:
Green on exposed parts with white markings and whitish callus, dark red on covered parts, glabrous, apex rounded, 3.5-4 mm long and 2.8-3.2 mm wide.

APPENDAGE:
NONE

BRACTEOLE:
Red with green tip, glabrous, narrow, apex rounded, 2.5 cm long and about 1 cm wide.

CALYX:
Red with green tips, glabrous, 2 cm long and 1.3 cm wide.

COROLLA:
White, glabrous, main dorsal lobe is 6 cm long and 3 cm wide, auxiliary lobes are 6 cm long and 1.8 cm wide. Main lobe is bluntly rounded at apex with a distinct short acumen.

LABELLUM:
Large, spreading, white with pale yellow center and pinkish tinges, glabrous. There are four distinct longitudinal channels on underside. Labellum is 6 cm long and 5 cm wide when spread out.

STAMEN:
White, tinged with yellow and pink, glabrous, narrowly ellptical, tapered to a cunate apex, 5 cm long and 1.7 cm wide.
