USBRG#1994-675 - Plowman collection from San Martin-Huanuco border: Aspusana, Peru, from Tingo Maria Botanical Garden

DETERMINATION:
By Chelsea Specht and confirmed by Dr. Paul Maas. This is an undescribed species, referred to as "El Whiskey" for identification purposes.

GENERAL:
Plant is short and stocky looking, about 1 meter in height, with large leaves, dark green upper and purple undersides. Flowers are terminal on a leafy shoot, white with red stripes, and the infl. cone is round in shape and green. Superficially it resembles Costus erythrophyllus, but the foliage has a more upright form.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Very thick, 20-23 mm in diameter, green (lower parts purplish), puberulous.

LIGULE:
Medium, 10-15 mm in length, truncate to slightly lobed, green, puberulous.

PETIOLE:
Short and thick in relation to leaves, 8-10 mm wide by 12-15 mm long, green, puberulous like sheath and ligule.

LEAVES:
Large, mostly 38-45 cm in length and 11-16 cm in width, broadly elliptical, apex acute to shortly acuminate (acumen 2-3 mm), base is cunate to rounded. Upper side is dark green, puberulous, not plicate. Underside is deep purple, glabrous.

INFLORESCENCE:
Terminal on a leafy shoot, ovate to round in shape, dark green with some dark red markings visible. Bright yellow, corolla bulges out making the flower look short and fat, 3.5 cm long by 2 cm wide. Visible flower parts are glabrous.

BRACTS:
Mostly dark red, pubescent, but covered by green appendage of overlapping bracts, 4-5 cm long by 3-4 cm wide.

APPENDAGE:
Green, pubescent, broadly triangular and curved inward on edges, 1.5 cm long by 2 cm wide.

BRACTEOLE:
Red with green tip, pubescent, narrow boat-shaped, 3.5 cm long by .6 cm wide.

CALYX:
Red, tipped in green, pubescent, open on one side 25-2.8 cm long by 0.8-1.0 cm wide.

COROLLA:
White, translucent, glabrous, 6 cm long by 1.7 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
White with pink stripes, yellow throat, glabrous, irregularly cut along edges, broad, spreading, 7 cm long by 7 cm wide when spread.

STAMEN:
Red, glabrous, 6 cm long by 0.8-1.0 cm wide
