LOCATION:
Le Jardin Ombragé

SOURCE:
Collected in Smithsonian, USBRG#1995-185, origin unknown.

DETERMINATION:
Determined by Tom Wood to be C. erythrothyrsus, but Maas lists erythrothyrsus as an incorrect synonym for Costus spiralis.

GENERAL:
Compact plant with thin stems, long-blooming bright red basal inflorescence. Also flowers terminally from leafy stems.

RHIZOME :


SHEATH:
Green, glabrous, 0.8 cm in diameter.

LIGULE:
Green, glabrous, 4-5 mm long.

PETIOLE:
Green, glabrous, 8 mm long.

LEAVES:
Green, glabrous both sides, to 17 cm long by 5.5 cm wide.

INFLORESCENCE:
Basal, on a peduncle 15-18 cm long, cherry red bracts, new flower buds look yellow but they mature to pinkish orange color.

BRACTS:
Cherry red, glabrous, dark red callus, rounded, 3 cm long by 2.8 cm wide.

APPENDAGE:
NONE

BRACTEOLE:
Pinkish red, glabrous, boat shaped, 2 cm long by 0.4 cm wide.

CALYX:
Pinkish red, glabrous, closed, pointed, acute lobes, 1.5 cm long by 0.8 cm wide.

COROLLA:
Extends beyond labellum and encloses labellum and stamen, giving the flower a pointed look, pinkish orange to yellow-green at tip, acute apex, lobes are 4.5 cm long by 1 cm wide.

LABELLUM:
Color like corolla, tubular, 3.5 cm long by 0.8 cm wide.

STAMEN:
Pale pink, 3 cm long by 0.7 cm wide.
