Collected in Panama in the hills above Almirante, Bocos del Toro, eastern Panama, on the Carribean side.

By Dave Skinner, this is somewhat different looking from the more typical C. laevis specimens I have seen on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, with greener bracts and less red color in the flowers.

Beautiful dark green foliage with silvery midrib and purplish undersides - especially with young foliage.

New sheaths twisted and bulging, dark green or purplish, glabrous, 12-14 mm in diameter.

LIGULE:
Purplish, or dark green, glabrous to minutely fibrous at margins, equally 2-lobed, raised callus near apex of lobes, 10-15 mm in length.

PETIOLE:
Purplish, glabrous, proportionately long compared to ligules, 15-20 mm long.

LEAVES:
Upper side dark green, silvery color along costa, especially in younger leaves, undersides purplish in young foliage aging to green, both sides glabrous, narrowly elliptic, base cuneate, apex acuminate, acumen to 10 mm long, leaves to 40 cm long by 14 cm wide.
