The following botanical gardens and conservatories are known to have collections of gingers. I have also listed on each plant page, the gardens that are known to have the plant in their collections. Many of the pictures on my image pages came from visits to these gardens.
NORTH AMERICA
Atlanta Botanic Gardens has a surprisingly large collection of gingers in their conservatory, and some hardier Hedychiums and Curcumas outside.
Calgary Zoo and Botanical Garden, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Contact Ray Lampert, rlampertis@home.com.
, Chicago, Illinois, USA, e-mail cbglib@nslsilus.org. Has a selection of 16 gingers on display.
, Coral Gables (Miami), Florida, USA, E-mail gwmail@ftg.org This is the largest public display of gingers I have seen so far, but it takes some looking to find them. The biggest concentration is in plot 27. You can go to the gift shop, and in the back they have the full list of plants, alphabetical by species, with the plot location and a map.
, Largo, Florida, USA, E-mail Pinellas@gnv.ifas.ufl.edu. This is a new botanical garden that was started (I believe) by the Pinellas Cooperative Extention Service. They have a nice collection of the more common ornamental gingers.
, Fullerton, California, USA, E-mail glwilliams@Exchange.FULLERTON.EDU I had the pleasure of visiting Glenn and bringing some of my gingers to be grown there.
Harry P. Leu Gardens, Orlando, Florida, USA. There is a fairly good selection, but the recent renovations of the ravine area has the place a bit messed up. Identification of some of the gingers there is questionable.
of Houston, Texas does not have its own website yet, but does it have gingers! Chief Horticulturalist Linda Gay is a ginger lover extraordinaire, and she has added many species to the gardens. I have compiled a partial list of gingers that are on display at Mercer. Mercer Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, 22306 Aldine Westfield Road, Humble, Texas, (281) 443-8731
Sarasota, Florida - I finally got a chance to visit, and found they have a nice collection of Costus in the conservatory, but not much else in the way of gingers.
, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, E-mail rsucher@ridgway.mobot.org
, "DOMES", Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
, West Palm Beach, Florida, USA, E-mail
jeterjm@gate.net I finally got a chance to visit here, not a huge collection of gingers, but interesting none-the-less.
, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. They have great selection of commonly cultivated gingers and several that I have seen nowhere else. For additional information on their ginger collection, contact David Carpenter at nobotanicalgarden@excite.com
New York Botanical Garden, New York, New York, USA
does not have a huge collection of gingers, but it is well worth a visit. Their orchid collection is unbelievable.
San Antonio Botanical Gardens, San Antonio, Texas, USA
, Storrs, Connecticut, USA
, Madison, Wisconsin, USA
, Miami, Florida, USA. I am very confused by the listing on their website - whether their listinga are for Fairchild Tropical Gardens or just what.
