Dr. Larsen gives presentation on the Zingiberaceae of Thailand

Dr. Larsen gave an overview of the Zingiberaceous plants in Thailand and explained the project he is coordinating to compile an updated list of Zingiberaceae in Thailand. Just a few of his interesting comments were:
  1. Smithatris supraneae was used in monasteries for centuries before it was officially described and named last year. There is a possible second species of Smithatris from Chiang Mai that is currently under study.
  2. Caulokaempferia is endemic to Thailand. There are 7-8 species and many new species to be described.
  3. Alpinia nigra may have 2 subspecies.
