The Zingiberaceae in Southern Thailand - Puangpen Sirirugsa (Speaker) & Charun Maknoi
Dr. Sirriugsa showed slides and described a large number of gingers from Southern Thailand. This list includes just a few of the Alpinias and Etlingeras she mentioned.:
- Alpinia cf. zingiberina
- Alpinia pahungensis
- Alpinia fafflesiana - similar looking to A. purpurata but with white bracts. This has probably been incorrectly identified in the USA horiticulture as a variety of A. purpurata.
- Etlingera corneri
- Etlingera fulgens
- Etlingera fulgens
- Etlingera littoralis
- Etlingera maingayi
- Etlingera metriocheilos
- Etlingera paliciflora
- Etlingera puncia
- Etlingera triogyallis
- Etlingera venusta
- Also noted a beautiful Boesenbergia acuminata
- Said that Curcuma aeruginosa sometimes has whitish colored rhizomes instead of blue
- Mentioned Curcuma rubescens - I wonder if she is aware of C. 'Scarlet Fever' in the US hort. trade?
- Hanniffia albiflora
- Zingiber mythianum - often confused with Z. rubens
- Zingiber spectabile - two forms, yellow bracts and red bracts
