BOTANICAL NOTES:
This accession was collected near Santa Maria de Boyacá, Colombia in the eastern foothills of the mountains. It is a different form of Costus comosus from all the others listed here as "distinct forms". I believe it might be consistent with the form in Venezuela that is the basis for the type illustration of a plant collected many years ago in Caracas. The political situation in Venezuela has made it too dangerous to go there to see the form of the living plants. Herbarium specimens that I have seen imaged are somewhat consistent with this form but not conclusively so.

I have given it a cultivar name, not yet registered, of Costus 'Cherry Drops' based on the deep red color of the bracts and the very small globular shaped inflorescence.
