GOOGLE PHOTO ALBUM SYNONYMS: BOTANICAL NOTES: Costus prancei was published March 22, 2023 in PhytoKeys 222: 75-127 by Paul Maas. This species has been included in the species Costus sprucei, but recent research by Dr. Maas and by Thiago André has disclosed some questions about the relationship between Costus sprucei, Costus chartaceus, and this new species from the western parts of Brazil. The most apparent differences involve the flower color and the ligule length but Dr. Maas' further investigation has cast doubt about these three species. It is hoped that further cladistic analysis in a forthcoming molecular phylogeny will help to clear this up but so far we have been unable to secure a sample from this species. The photo below is from the Serra do Moa near the western tip of Brazil in the state of Acre, and it represents the current thought about the form of this new species. Costus chartaceus and Costus sprucei photos can be found on their data sheet pages. I have not seen any of the three in wild populations.
