Gingersrus Database Taxon ID 7838Costus curvibracteatus (Pocosol form)OLD NAME: Costus curvibracteatus 'Pocosol' NEW NAME: Costus curvibracteatus (Pocosol form) NAME CHANGE NOTES: Form of Costus curvibracteatus with nearly pure red bracts and longer flowers extending beyond the bracts FULL SCIENTIFIC NAME: STATUS : distinct form CONTINENT: Neotropical FIELD OBSERVATIONS:(If field observations are available, you can click on the link to open in a new window.) PHOTOS:(If photos are available, you can click on the link to open in a new window.) SYNONYMS: BOTANICAL NOTES: in the Tilaran Mountains around the Pocosol Biological Station I found a form of Costus curvibracteatus that has nearly solid red bracts instead of the type which has red and orange or yellow bracts. It is a shorter form, growing to about one meter tall, and the yellow tubular flowers are longer, fully protruding from the bracts instead of hiding behind the bracts as in the type from TapantÃ. I found this same form growing in the Cordillera Central, Parqué Nacional Braulio Carrillo at Alberque El Socorro, but with a little more yellow color in the middle part of the bracts. I do not believe this to be a separate species from the others as the changes in form from the Tilaran Mountains of Costa Rica in the north to Cerro Gaital in Panama are gradual with many intermediates.
