During my first trip to western Ecuador in 2007 I saw several examples of a form of Costus pulverulentus that grows to about one meter tall, does not have the leaves congested toward the top, and does not have the spreading corolla lobes found in the Central America form. In this form the corolla lobes usually extend and wrap around the labellum and barely show the apex of the stamen such that I did not even recognize the species at first. I thought I was looking at Costus scaber which I have since learned only grows to the EAST of the mountains in Ecuador.

Only after I pulled apart the inflorescence and flower could I tell for certain that the plant was C. pulverulentus and not C. scaber. The stamen far exceeded the labellum and the calyx was longer than its width. Most of the C. pulverulentus found in Ecuador are similar to this form, but I do believe it to be the same species as the other forms.

Nevertheless it would be good to include an example of this form in a molecular phylogeny to see what the evolutionary lineage would tell us.
