Gingersrus Database Taxon ID 7583Costus pictus 'San Francisco Red'OLD NAME: Costus pictus 'San Francisco Red' NEW NAME: Costus pictus 'San Francisco Red' NAME CHANGE NOTES: Red flowering form of Costus pictus found in Costa Rica FULL SCIENTIFIC NAME: STATUS : unregistered cultivar CONTINENT: Neotropical FIELD OBSERVATIONS:(If field observations are available, you can click on the link to open in a new window.) PHOTOS:(If photos are available, you can click on the link to open in a new window.) SYNONYMS: BOTANICAL NOTES: This Costus was found in the state of Chiapas, Mexico in the area around Tapachula. It has some characters of Costus pictus, but with bright red (or orange-red) corolla lobes instead of yellow corollas, producing a plant with the appearance of all-red flowers on green unappendaged bracts. The plants also have very distinctive purple colors on the petioles. A thumbnail page showing photos of this plant can be found at http://www.gingersrus.com/images/P7583. Paul Maas, in his 1972 monograph, seems to include these plants as Costus pictus, mentioning that the corolla lobes can be yellow or red, but I found it to be a distinct species or at least a separate form due to the difference in habitat. The two species were found co-located in a few sites at the higher end of the altitude range of this one and the lower end of the altitude range of the yellow flowered Costus pictus. Accordingly, I am giving this a cultivar name of 'San Francisco Red', named after the first location where I saw it near Cascada San Francisco on the Rio Cuilco.
