PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus 'Longhair'
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME:
STATUS :
CONTINENT: Neotropical
SYNONYMS:

BOTANICAL NOTES:
Seeds collected in 2008 from a plant on the Rio Teribe in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Was not in flower when it was collected and I expected it to be Costus villosissimus. When the plant grew and flowered for the first time in 2014 I was surprised to see a C. guanaiensis type flower on a C. villosissimus style green appendaged bracts. I believed it to be a natural hybrid of C. guanaiensis with C. villosissimus - both of which are growing in the vicinity. After re-reading the description by Maas (see PID #3351), I now have come to recognize this plant as C. allenii. I have not yet registered a cultivar name for this but I am at least temporarilly calling it Costus 'Longhair' based on the long C. villosissimis type hairs.UPDATE 2016: Unlike the typical C. allenii, this plant has appendaged bracts. After seeing many plants of Costus allenii in central Panama in November 2015, I am back to the position that this is more likely to be a local hybrid with C. guanaiensis. I am simply listing this under the cultivar name 'Longhair'.

ACCESSION NOTES:
R3158 from seeds collected in Panama, Bocas del Toro, along the Rio Teribe. Appeared to be Costus villosissimus until it flowered in 2014 and then determined closest to Costus allenii but with appendaged bracts. Now determined simply by the cultivar name 'Longhair' as it is not known whether this is a proper species or possibly a natural hybrid of C. villosissimus and C. guanaiensis which both occur in the region. This collection has been vouchered at the UC Berkeley, Jepsen Herbarium, UC2045803.
