BOTANICAL NOTES:
This cultivar was grown from seeds collected in 2008 from a plant on the Rio Teribe in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The plant was not in flower but based on the form of the bract appendages and the long villose hairs I expected it to be Costus villosissimus. When the plant grew and flowered for the first time in 2014 I was surprised to see a C. guanaiensis type flower on a C. villosissimus style inflorescence with green appendaged bracts. I believe it to be a natural hybrid of C. guanaiensis with C. villosissimus - both of which are growing in the vicinity.

The cultivar was registered and published in the Bulletin of the Heliconia Society International, Vol. 23, No. 3 as Costus allenii 'Longhair' but a sample of this accession (R3158) was included in a molecular phylogeny at Cornell University and was found to be in a separate clade very close to Costus villosissimus. It is probably as I first suspected a hybrid of that species with Costus macrostrobilus (formerly known as C. guanaiensis var. macrostrobilus).
