Specht, Blumea 61, 2016: 280 - 318, http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/blumea/2016/00000061/00000003/art00010) New species of African Costus published in Phyto Keys 18:12.2012 (19 Nov 2012). A single population of this species was found growing in wet forest on white sand soil under rain forest canopy at Parc Nacional de Loango in coastal Gabon. Phylogeny revealed it to be closest to Costus ligularis (a/k/a Costus mosaicus) and the morphologically its flower is similar to Costus spectabilis and vegetatively close to Costus ligularis. It has a longer calyx (11-12 mm) than C. ligularis and yellow flowers like C. spectabilis. Plant is about 1/2 meter tall.
