PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus claviger (aff. claviger) Manu form
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME:
SEEPID#7425 FOR A GENERAL DISCUSSION OF COSTUS AFF. CLAVIGER FORMS.
I found another interesting Costus at Manu Learning Centre and at Villa Carmen in Peru, usually growing in low, sunny areas in disturbed forest. It seems to match best to the Costus aff. Claviger described by Maas in 1977. It is terminal flowering with red bracts and green appendages. The ligules are very short (barely 2 mm) and truncate. The bracteole is about 22 mm long and the calyx about 12 mm long. It departs from Maas' description by having a visible nectar callus on the bract. It has a uniquely recurved labellum and all the plants I saw had the corolla lobes folded outward.
