PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae BOTANICAL NAME: Costus sp. -MLC-Yellow Bracts FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME: STATUS :R3278 CONTINENT: Neotropical SYNONYMS: BOTANICAL NOTES: This one is a real mystery. It was seen in the Manu area of Peru, in open habitat, low area near river at Manu Learning Center. Very unusual yellowish appendaged bracts, dense soft hairs and lacking ligules or petioles. Unfortunately the flowers were not out when I was there, but it is somewhat similar to a plant that Bruce Dunstan photographed in 2008 in the same habitat and area. I suppose it could be some weird hybrid because I only saw the one plant, but who knows. A thumbnail page showing photos of this plant can be found at http://www.gingersrus.com/images/P7510 |
