PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus 'Southern Cross'
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME:
STATUS :
CONTINENT: Neotropical
SYNONYMS:

BOTANICAL NOTES:
This is my first hybrid, from 2006, crossing Costus 'Tropicais' with the horticultural plant Costus barbatus (Costus comosus var. bakeri). It is a vigorous grower and easy to flower. The plant often flowers at 1 to 1 1/2 meters but can grow much taller. It is mostly glabrous except for the pubescence on the undersides of the leaves. Leaves have cordate leaf base and ligules are truncate, 3-5 mm long. The bracts are bright red but not appendaged and the flowers are bright yellow and tubular.

ACCESSION NOTES:

GINGERSRUS CATALOG LISTING:
This was the first hybrid Costus I made to produce flowers. It is a cross of Costus comosus (the one sold as C. barbatus) with Costus 'Tropicais'. It is a medium to tall Costus and has not yet been tested for hardiness but both parents are hardy, so chances are it will be also. It has the proverbial hybrid vigor and is very easy to grow.
