Flora of Tropical Africa, 1898 - describes this species. Terminal inflo, short ligule, erect stems, long and stout, bracts larger than C. afer or C. lucan., flower broad, white or tinged with rose red. British East Africa.
"6. C. trachyphyllus, Schumann in Engl. Jahrb. Xv. 420. Leafystem long, moderately stout. Leaves oblong, acute, 10-12 in. long,3-4 in. broad at the middle, cuneate at the base, firm in texture, pubescentbeneath; petiole very short; ligule short, truncate. Spikes many-flowered, oblong, terminal, 3 in. long, 2 in. diam. ; outer bracts orbicular,glabrous, 1 1/4 in. broad. Calyx funnel-shaped, 1/2 in. long; teeth 1/3 - 1/4 aslong as the tube. Corolla-lobes oblong, acute, 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 in. long. Lipobovate, 2 1/2-3 in. long, 1 1/2 in. broad, white or tinged with rose-red;petaloid filament about 1 in. shorter than the lip, obtuse; anther 1/3 in.Long, placed half-way down the filament. .
