PHOTOS:(If photos are available, you can click on the link to open in a new window.) SYNONYMS: BOTANICAL NOTES: This species was placed in synonymy with Costus laevis by Paul Maas in his 1972 monograph. The author listed as Donn.Sm. & Türckh. It was published in the Botanical Gazette, Volume 33, edited by John Merle Coulter, M.S. Coulter, Charles Reid Barnes, Joseph Charles Arthur, page 260-261 as part of Rowlee's Genus Costus in Central America. R3508 - This is believed to be the form that was described as Costus splendens from Guatemala. It is a gigantic form similar to C. laevis and currently listed as a synonym for that species. I saw this form in Guatemala but did not collect it there. This one is quite similar found in Honduras, Atlantica, near the Rio Congrejal at Omega Tours Ecolodge. Although this is a much showier and arguably more beautiful form of C. kuntzei than the maximus or skutchii forms, it is none-the-less probably the same species.
